Cathedral Cove is contained in the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve offering some of the best diving and snorkeling on the northern island.
The area Cathedral Cove or officially called the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve is a small four times two kilometer wide area just to the east of Auckland in the Coromandel Peninsula. The islands just offshore offer diving at many different dive sites. There is excellent diving on the islands Motukorure, Motueka, Poikeke, Waikaranga, Okorotere, Mahurangi, Te Tio and Te Karare. Its shore-lined bays such as Mares Leg Cove, Stingray Bay and Gemstone Bay are as spectacular especially for snorkeling. Pictures of Cathedral Cove are often used on travel magazines and tours to New Zealand. Other highlights are the beach in front of Hahei, the Wigmore Pass and hot water beach. Digging a hole on this beach makes it possible to relax lying down in a hot bath coming from underground hot springs.
Cathedral Cove Dive Hahei: The 5km of coastline running south to hot water beach, is sheltered from all wind coming from the north or west. The stunning cliffs and islands provide ideal bays for numerous dive sites in this area, ranging in depth from 5m to 20m. The boat can be taken into Orua Cave and the blowhole on certain tides and the topside scenery is well worth the trip.
