The Aldermen Islands are a set of protected small islands off the coast of Tairua.

The Aldermen Islands, consisting out of the Hongiora, Ruamahuaiti, Middle and Ruamahuanui Islands, can be found twenty kilometers east of Tairua. They have been protected since 1933 and nowadays offer a wide variety of birds, mammals and also marine species. You will need a permit to visit and it is not uncommon to spot dolphins, maomao, turtles, seals, marlin and crayfish. You will find steep walled pinnacles and in kelp covered boulders; the perfect conditions for some great scuba diving.
